Gravel & Material Calculator

Not sure how much gravel, sand, mulch, or topsoil you need? Enter the area you're covering and we'll estimate the tons — then get a real delivered price for it.

Typical depth by project

  • Gravel or decorative rock paths/beds: 2–3 inches
  • Driveways or road base: 3–4 inches (compacted)
  • Mulch beds: 2–3 inches
  • Topsoil for new lawn or garden beds: 4–6 inches

How the math works

Multiply your area's length and width in feet, multiply by your depth converted to feet (depth in inches ÷ 12), then divide by 27 to get cubic yards: (L × W × (depth in inches ÷ 12)) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. We then convert cubic yards to tons using the real, material-specific density for whatever you're ordering — heavier materials like gravel weigh more per yard than lighter ones like mulch, so the same size project needs a different number of tons depending on what you're covering it with.
