Every shape comes down to square feet first. A rectangle is length times width, a circle is pi times the radius squared, and a triangle is half the base times the height. Multiply that area by your depth converted to feet (depth in inches divided by 12), then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
Converting yards to tons is where material choice matters. We use the real, material-specific density for whatever you pick — heavier materials like gravel weigh considerably more per yard than lighter ones like mulch, so the same size project needs a different number of tons depending on what you're covering it with. That's why a ton of compost covers more than twice the ground a ton of topsoil does.
