Those two go together more often than people expect — a yard getting rock in the park strip is frequently the same yard putting compost into the beds that are staying planted. If you are doing both, it is worth ordering them together rather than as two separate deliveries.
The east side is the part worth planning around. Yards up on the bench get steep, and slope changes what works. Angular material like 3/4 minus locks together and stays where you put it; round river rock and pea gravel will migrate downhill over a few seasons and end up piled at the bottom. On anything steeper than a gentle grade, go angular even if you prefer the look of the round stuff.
Steep lots also affect the delivery itself. A truck needs a reasonably level spot to dump, so on a bench property the material usually lands at the top of the driveway and gets moved from there. Worth knowing before the truck arrives — a few extra wheelbarrow trips is very different from being surprised by them.
If you are seeding or overseeding rather than converting to rock, compost is what you want, not topsoil. A quarter to a half inch topdressed over an aerated lawn does more than several inches of soil would.

It depends on the truck serving your area, but most loads top out around 15 tons. Orders larger than that take multiple trips, and delivery is priced per trip — which is why a 20-ton order costs more per ton to deliver than a 15-ton one.
It varies by material, because density varies. As a rough guide, one ton of road base covers about 80 square feet at 3 inches deep. Mulch is much lighter and covers considerably more. Our calculator does the conversion using the real density of whatever you pick.
Road base is crushed rock mixed with fines that lock together and compact into a hard surface — it is what you want under a driveway, shed pad, or paver project. Decorative gravel and landscape rock are washed and uniform, so they stay loose. Loose rock looks better; road base holds up under weight.
Deliveries run weekdays. Most yards are closed on weekends, and orders need at least two business days notice so the yard can schedule the load.
